Talk to Yourself Like a Friend

It can be really easy to be hard on ourselves. We beat ourselves, especially during our healing process or even when we are walking with someone during their healing process. We tell ourselves we aren’t doing good enough, that it’s our fault, that no one will believe us or care, that we are not valuable or worthy.

One exercise we can use to combat beating ourselves up is to talk to ourselves as though we are someone else. Would you tell a close friend the things that you tell yourself? What about a child? Probably not! Let’s reframe our stories as something a friend is telling us and respond in the ways we would to that friend. It becomes easier and easier to say it’s not your fault, you’re doing the best you can, you are valuable.

What do you do to be kind to yourself? What helps you?
